How the Paint Estimator Works

The paint estimator calculates your net paintable area by starting with the total wall surface — perimeter times ceiling height — and subtracting standard allowances for doors and windows. Doors are deducted at 20 square feet each and windows at 15 square feet each, which are the standard industry deductions for estimate purposes.

Coverage is calculated at 350 square feet per gallon, which is the manufacturer average for most interior latex paints on smooth drywall. Textured walls and high-porosity surfaces absorb more paint and may bring coverage down to 300 square feet per gallon. If you are painting over a dark color with a light one, plan for an extra coat.

Flooring Waste Factor Explained

Flooring always requires more material than the room area suggests. Cuts that do not reach a full plank or tile, pieces that crack during installation, and starter rows that require partial pieces all add up. The standard industry waste factor for straight-lay patterns is 10 percent. Diagonal patterns, herringbone, and irregular room shapes typically require 15 percent.

Always order extra and keep leftover pieces. Floor materials are often discontinued within a year of purchase. Having three or four extra planks stored flat and dry means you can repair a damaged section without hunting for a match or replacing the entire floor.

Drywall Sheet Counts

Standard 4 x 8 drywall sheets cover 32 square feet each. The estimator calculates walls and ceiling separately, applies standard deductions for openings, and returns the total sheet count. Add 10 to 15 percent for cuts and waste before placing your order.

For rooms with high ceilings or unusual dimensions, consider ordering 4 x 10 or 4 x 12 sheets to reduce seams. Fewer seams mean less taping, less mud, and a better finished surface. The sheet count in the estimator assumes standard 4 x 8 panels.
